Through the Pain

How did I get through all the days

of pain that shook my mother’s frame

as her shadow detached, stitch

by stitch to slip outside and surf

the waves that kissed another shore.

My pain joined hands with hers.

I found that even pain

can taste the blue of berries

bursting in my mouth.
