I saw a present for my friend as night ran from the day. I scooped it up with handy jar and laid it in a birthday box.
He opened it with childlike glee and saw the jar was empty.
Just open it, don’t be afraid, I whispered in his ear.
He looked at me and shook his head, but pried the jar top open.
A rainbow wrapped in misty rain popped out and filled the room. Lilacs bloomed on carpet, and birdsong flitted to the door.
I wanted you to seize the day, I said, this is the present.
