I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
– Robert Frost, “The Road Not Taken”
How often, when a choice diverged,
I could not tell which path was best.
I hadn’t time to try them both.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
that I would take the safest one.
The one well-marked
with lights and lines.
Somewhere ages and ages hence
I will regret I did not risk
the me I knew, perhaps
to be a better man.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I chose what others chose for me.
A captured bird, not one who flew
into the day and fluttered free.
I took the one less traveled by,
a lie I still believe today.
I can’t admit my discontent
and find the path I didn't take.
And that has made all the difference.
